I think M was going for (her version of) a “professional” look. I actually liked the suit. Also, did you see the video of them arriving? PH was still greeting people when M walked out of the room/entry. She didn’t bother to wait for him.

She’s making really strange outfit choices. The Hamilton dress was more “date night” than gala and this was more TED Talk than anything else.
