Creating confusion with multiple conflicting narratives / timelines is a very effective PR strategy, especially if you have bad press. It allows the celeb to become Teflon because it sows distrust in all news sources, good and bad. When are ready to make a statement they can signal that the “good” stuff is true while the bad stuff is all just “fake news.” And, it still keeps your name in the press.
