I’ve been kind of wondering all day when exactly was it that he found out Megs was pregnant, for certain. Given the timeline, he was in Africa for most of August. They partied it up on a weekend in Amsterdam. He looked super nervous inside the chapel at Eugenie’s wedding. Has he really known about it as long as she has?
Or is he just headed for a meltdown by the end of this tour?
Sorry for the long absence, guys. Sadly, blogging will continue to be sporadic until after the US midterm elections. I have a ton of work to do until then and it’s a lot more important than royal anything. By the way, if you’re a United States reader, remember to go vote on November 6th!!!!
But I’m still pretty obsessive about the blog, so here are some thoughts on the past few weeks.
The boots came back! Kate wore her trusty Penelope Chilvers on her first post-maternity engagement. I thought this event was spot on. she looked casual but perfectly groomed and she was great with the kids (I loved the cup-holding Duchess). She just kind of stepped back and let the kids and the charity shine.
Meghan then wore some hideous leather skirt to Sussex. I’ve been bitching about Letizia’s tacky leather skirts for years, so I obviously hated this. Meghan is truly amazing, though. She managed to wrinkle leather, which I didn’t think was possible. This is also her third nearly-identical green ensemble.
Then Kate wore an Erdem dress I actually liked. We must be entering end times. I love that the dress was inspired by the Queen. That (and the POC plaid) was a nice touch. I liked the plum pumps and clutch, but hated the earrings (which were also Erdem, so I still get to say that I hated something Erdem).
That dress outglammed Meghan’s fug black Givenchy in every single way. Same thing happened at Eugenie’s wedding with Kate’s semi-recycled raspberry dress outshining Meghan’s maternity funeral-wear.
I see a lot of Kate fans taking the “real queens fix each other’s crowns” high road on twitter. I think that’s partly because they are genuinely nice people (far nicer than me!), and partly because this is not a competition at this point.
Eugenie’s wedding was lovely and heartwarming. The groom, was too cute and the bride was gorgeous. I loved the colors (the tiara had emeralds!), absolutely adored the unusual floral arrangements (chinese lanterns! York roses! Blue thistles!), appreciated all the details honoring Eugenie’s family and heritage, and enjoyed the nods to their charity endeavors. Andrew hovering around like a mother hen was adorable, and Fergie and Bea looked gorgeous. Fergie’s carousel party looked like a lot of fun. It was heads and shoulders above the über-basic Pinterest wedding the Sussexes put up.
And speaking of, this how the Sussexes showed up in Australia. They look like a hot mess. Is it me, or is Harry’s bald spot huuuuuuge now?
I still can’t believe they are being this irresponsible, but this is Meghan to a T. She’s on a schedule and she won’t let anything, not even her baby’s health, stand between her and her goal.
I don’t think the press is going to crucify them at their first engagements. Unless something major happens, they’ll wait until there is an established pattern to note something worthy of critique.
Megs has such short-term thinking. She’s only thinking about what she has to say to look good regarding Sam being in the UK.
She doesn’t and can’t think further down the road to when angry mobs are protesting about frivolous spending, like hers. And yet, she thinks she’s some kind of pr genius.
The really interesting part of this article is the location of Doria’s penthouse.
I’m going to drop into conspiracy theory here, so #conspiracywarning. This new pad, which is suspiciously far away from their main home in the Cotswolds is NOT for Doria. Meghan is buying herself a bolthole in the city far away from palace staff. Also, it’s going to end up being a Soho House property.
Oh, really?! Brexit is going terribly and is going to affect the entire UK, but Megsy needs to decorate an expensive flat for her mom, who let us remember did not stay longer than a week after the cookbook photo op.
I have to admit this is pretty impressive. Most people think of the royal life as one of service and sacrifice, but Meghan has made it all about self-actualization.

Exactly. This is what Meghan is saying through KP using Richard Kay as a mouthpiece. She’s trying to normalize her non-royal mother as part of the royal family for her appearances.
I’m not going to harbor any guesses as to what could or couldn’t come out. Since you mentioned it, I think the UK press doing an article about the merching with Jessica Mulroney is probably a big possibility. Megs will probably be wearing different, expensive, couture ensembles multiple times a day. Writing about the huge cost of her wardrobe for that tour practically writes itself. It’s a 16-day tour. By day 7 the press will already have seen almost half of it. Multiple articles could easily be written. And it will be very easy to point out that Kate works with a much smaller budget.
I know that tarot readers have said that secrets will be revealed–as in things Megs is hiding that Harry doesn’t know about–but I’m not convinced that those are the kinds of things that will instantly come out in the press. It’s certainly possible. But it could be just revealed to Harry and the royal family and not the press at that stage. Perhaps the press just writes about it later. We’ll just have to see.

The kind of fantasy Meghan is spinning is fine in Hollywood, but once you are in the political sphere or in the royal family, it becomes propaganda. It’s as real as Trump’s supposed riches and blue collar sympathies and just as seductive. Rhiannon is correct to be wary of it.
But the UK press is in a bind because they’ve been letting the royal propaganda skate so far. Now, sure, they did it because the royals were relatively discreet about it. They visit the Grenfell victims and do fundraisers, but their pictures aren’t in the front and the interactions are a ritualized posy offering and maybe a quick hug.
Meghan looks somehow tranquilized and wired at the same time. Talk about magic.
She’s zoned out and trying to compensate for it. I wonder why she hit the Xanax this time. Are we getting another daddy interview this weekend?
Probably. Didn’t he give a 9-hour interview to the Daily Mail back in early August? And they probably haven’t published everything he told them as of yet.
They’ll likely try that, but is it believable? I mean, look at the big picture. He flew an actress he’d just met to Botswana on a work trip, then he gave her royal security, then he flew to see her after an official tour, all in the space of a few months. He got away with A LOT.
I’m beginning to wonder if this article will end up opening the door to more articles in Fleet Street exposing money shenanigans, particularly those by Megs and Harry.
I’m very curious to see who pounces on this and whether they let KP brush them off with a haughty non-denial. This is potentially a big deal. There’s no “they might have been engaged” here.

Well, I wasn’t surprised that another interview with Papa Markle was released this past weekend. This week overall is pretty unfavorable, including this upcoming Saturday and Sunday.
I haven’t gotten a chance to read all the recent coverage, but given this article yesterday, I’m now wondering if Papa Markle is going to hit back more with another interview round this weekend. At this point, I suspect the article about Doria moving was just being floated around to see what the reaction was before it actually happens. But I can see Papa Markle being pissed since he’s completely out in the cold at this point.
I wonder if those rumors of Doria being a felon are true. If so, then it could Papa Markle who exposes it by talking about it to the Daily Mail or some other Fleet Street outlet. He could totally talk about it, and then the rest of Fleet Street would have to verify it with legal records. If she really is planning on moving to the UK–and jumping ahead of thousands of other people in the immigration line–then her having a criminal record would be a serious issue I’d imagine.
The “friend” is talking again. The problem is not only her family won’t stfu.

Notice that this is not the first time that the palace has tried to reach out to her family and leaked it to the Times. They told Nikka that both of Meghan’s parents would be there for the baptism and neither one showed up. They told the Times that Meghan’s parents would be in the UK two weeks before the wedding so they would have time to meet the royals. Tom never showed up and Doria showed up forty-eight hours before the wedding.

Like you said, they seemed to be planning a visit after the wedding.
Now, that article came out on May 22nd, AFTER Tom had already talked to the press.
On May 19th Tom talked to TMZ about how much he loved the wedding, how he’d texted Meghan, and how all his relatives should “shut up.” He seemed to be expecting to see the newlyweds soon.
Remember, he had been talking to TMZ throughout the whole wedding. In fact, the whole “heart operation” drama WAS BASED ON HIS CALLS TO TMZ before and after the supposed operation on May 15th and 16th.
At this point he was just talking to TMZ to explain himself. He wasn’t saying anything about Meghan and Harry except that they had texted/spoken the day of the wedding.
On June 5th the DM got pics of him going to the barber looking pretty happy and relaxed.
Then on July 28th, Tom did the “better off dead” interview with the DM, mentioning Diana and explaining that the contact numbers he had for Meghan stopped working.
“Secret” my booty. They’ve leaked that to everyone. At first I thought it was her family making mischief, but the Times account seems semi-official as it quotes aides (that “former aide” sounds like ELF) instead of friends. BP/CH must have laid down the law.
I’m genuinely curious as to why they don’t allow the press near her. The reporters were catching quotes from her before the wedding and all she was saying was “Hi, I’m Meghan” and “It’s amazing.” Is she now talking politics all the time?
Pt 2 They also certainly know some significant portion of her past misdeeds and lies. So they see this game, they recognize the hypocrisy of PH/M and they have the ammunition to destroy them both. Which makes the game Harry and Meghan play all the more perplexing and dangerous. This will not end well.
It does kind of explain why he thinks the media should stay quite about stuff like her family and her spending. They are, after all, staying quiet about her pap pics, her leaks, and her merching. I don’t think he sees any difference.

I don’t see the upside for her at all. The reason she scheduled all of these royal events and splurged on all that couture is that she wanted to be hailed as the best royal who ever royaled.
She fully expected a magical roll-out in perfectly “modernized” royal outfits all crowed with a post-pregnancy Grand Slam celebration with her bff. Like that anon said, she was going to be the brf’s sexy Audrey Hepburn adding Hollywood glitz and glamour to the brf.
Instead, she got articles about how the royal family had killed her style, endless “broken protocol,” and “missed the color coordination memo” articles, an overshadowed Irish tour with panned political commentaries, a pat in the back from Kate when Serena lost, and her family crapping over everything. In two months she went from being Amal Clooney’s bff to double-dating with a Jonas brother.
I don’t see how much worse this could have gone for her, honestly. I know it feels like nothin is “sticking,” but it’s like with the Diana-worship stuff. It didn’t stick for a long and then BOOM it was everywhere.
Richard Palmer on the current situation, family drama, KP errors, Meghan’s ghosting, internet trolls from both sides. I’m still amazed that Royal Correspondents are speaking out the situation couldn’t be more clear nevertheless it seems the vicious circle is not stopping.

I’m also surprised that he had the guts to blame Harry and the KP statement for this treatment. I think he’s absolutely right, but I’m surprised to see a royal reporter calling it out so blatantly. It’s so ironic that Harry and Meghan, who complained so loudly about social media trolls and who, for the love of mercy, legit have a huge anti-bullying campaign in their name, ended up creating their own vicious troll army.
BTW, I think the royal reporters contributed here by interacting with and retweeting the trolls. Raise crows and they’ll peck your eyes out, as we say in Spanish.
I’m also surprised to see him compare the Markles to all the other royal-ish personalities who have made money on the connection. I don’t think he mentions Pippa and James, but they should be on that list too. True, they were more classy about it and their cashing-in attempts were mostly ineffective, but they still tried. They were all criticized for it, just as the Markles are being criticized.
I was wondering why Meghan and Harry’s engagements were so effing boring compared to all the other royal engagements. He explains that the royal reporters are not allowed to listen in. That’s why we don’t get cute quotes, interactions, or any substantive information and it all looks like a useless fashion show. Harry and Megs are really shooting themselves in the foot with this one.
That last one is huge, imo. Palmer seems to think that they may get something more substantive, particularly on the charity front, in the fall, but I very much doubt that. They will get another nothing-burger forum with some crap “Girls Together” umbrella being unveiled.
I think the royal reporters know the reality, but were overjoyed by the “hero Harry” pr drive and are happy that the royal family is getting more attention. This is, after all, their bread and butter.
I think they know it’s all an act, but they want the act to be successful because they profit from it. That’s why they were all so complimentary about Meghan’s supposed “ease” with the media coverage and the supposed professionalism that she was going to bring to KP. Unfortunately, right now the act is failing, the professionalism was her Hollywood pr agency and not her, and the whole thing is falling apart.

Not sure I believe that. If the press in the UK–particularly including Piers Morgan–had aired what was assumed to have been a private phone call with a member of the BRF, then there would have been a firestorm against the UK press. People in the UK remember the phone hacking scandal. Piers would have lost his job for that. Easily.
Oh, I DO NOT think her family is in on it. Megs would much, much, MUCH rather people be seeing her articles about her fashion and how she’s adjusting to royal life. This Daily Mail story is purely an attempt to put out the fires that her father is causing.
At the very end of the story, the DM repeats what Papa Markle said much earlier: “I was silent for a full year.” That’s a man saying he knows how to be quiet. I suspect that given Megs has hit back in the UK tabs with the heart stuff is fake that Papa Markle is going to hit back with he was never invited to the wedding to begin with. It’s what many people suspected early on.
And then we’ll be treated for another tit-for-tat between the Markles and Megs. It’s just going to go on and on and on. Meanwhile, Harry will eventually not get any press and start getting even more pissy about it. Such a lovely way to start a marriage…
Personally–the way this is going–I wouldn’t be surprised if next week or the week after if Thomas Markle hopped a plane to the London and did an in-the-studio LIVE interview with Piers Morgan.
