I don’t think the press is going to crucify them at their first engagements. Unless something major happens, they’ll wait until there is an established pattern to note something worthy of critique.
PR anon. I like to try and educate by exposing the game Markle is playing in the hopes that people will see just how pernicious PR is and how manipulated they are. Avoid the divisiveness and denial the political content creates by just using her as the example. It is still an uphill battle. Take the recent spate of articles allegedly about her in People this week. You always see a bunch of thinly disguised adverts for the shit she wears after an engagement. Pt 1
Pt 2 These are ads – she is basically endorsing the brand and gets paid for the use of her name as well as a % of the sales made. People gets a % too. It looks like a story but it is an ad and usually there is a disclaimer at the bottom of the page. You do not see this with Kate BTW. Also, she pumps fake stories like this pregnancy garbage out to maintain anticipation keep the interest up. None of it is true it is just a standard PR technique. MM is a hustler and con artist.
Isn’t that weird. Less attention than the Hamilton event, and I thought it was a lot more hyped, with video and television coverage and lots of hoopla.
I suspect she’s quickly realizing the limits of royal coverage.
so lonely Meghan beat goes on. her fav mouth piece (well after Lainey) Tom Sykes tells us the details of her lonely life. I can’t decide if this is a sympathy ploy or a reason for the divorce prep story but her pr sure is pushing it. What do you think?
I think the hardcore sugars are here to stay, and I expect they will get more and more rabid as Meghan flounders. That has been my experience so far.
I suspect the tour will be meh, but I doubt the media will report that she “needs major help.” Her problem isn’t that she can’t show up and shake hands. Her problem is that the planned tour stops mind-numbingly boring, the clothes are repetitive, monochrome and ill-fitting, and all she does is hold hands with Harry and pose. Yes, there’s always a chance that there will be a major disaster, but I doubt that as they will be surrounded by people whose main job is to keep that from happening. I think their main problem is boredom. Meghan is by far the most repetitive royal I have ever seen, and I used to bitch about Kate’s lace dresses nonstop.
When I think of what made Will and Kate’s first tour (to Canada) amazing, I remember how Kate picked Prince Edward Island based on the Anne of Green Gables books, and how professional she looked in her navy Smythe blazer (Canadian brand!) as they boarded the plane. The Cambridges positively embraced the official events, attending a citizenship ceremony, Canada Day, and the Calgary Stampede. Kate looked amazing in her recycled engagement dress and red maple leaf hat and she rocked the maple leaf brooch like nobody’s business. She wore Canadian Erdem freaking everywhere (tbh, they weren’t that bad back then), posed with Anne of Green Gables, and even dressed up like a Calgary cowboy.
Yes, they had cute couple moments at the helicopter training, the French cooking classes in Quebec, and the sea dragon race, but what I remember most about this tour was that it was a celebration of Canada, including its natural beauty, history, and diversity. LOL, and the “Marilyn moment,” of course.
Kate launched her tour with a bang, with sources telling the DM that she’s personally chosen Prince Edward’s Island because she loved the Anne books. I remember this causing quite a stir at the time and this is still one my favorite parts of their Canada tour.
It’s a stark contrast to the Harkle schedule release, which left people scratching their heads as to why they’d picked some of the stops and why they were skipping out on Invictus. I’ve been wondering why I have such a strong feeling that this tour will be a dud, and I think the underwhelming release of the schedule is part of it. This does not feel like a celebration of Australia, or event the Commonwealth. It feels like a celebration of Meghan and Harry.
It’s already dying down. I know it doesn’t feel that way because I post every little thing that comes up, but this is actually slowly winding down. Here’s how Meghan’s summer went
Interesting, no? The Irish tour barely made a blip. Her birthday was noteworthy because it was the first time she was seen after her Dad did his interview. Her best events other than that were the engagements with HM and Kate. The other big interest event was the hideous Oscar de la Renta gown. Weirdly enough, Hamilton barely gave her more press than the new dog and the Clooneys gave her no press at all!
I obviously follow this compulsively and post everything I see, but don’t let that mislead you. The outside interest in flagging.
Tom Sykes is now claiming that “nobody knows” who Eugenie is in the UK and people are upset that their perfectly normal royal wedding is a “folie de grandeur.” Oh, get real, Tom. Everyone in the UK knows Eugenie. They’ve all seen her grow up, and her fashion fails and vacations have been covered for years. And this is the standard royal wedding that Edward and Mark Phillips got. the brits are used to this crap by now.
I was unsure before, but now I’m certain Sykes is getting his leaks straight from Meghan. I can’t think of anyone else who would pick “no one knows who she is” as the main problem here.
Every day since the day the relationship was announced? Reeeeeaaaaaalllllyyyyyyy? This isn’t an anonymous source. This is an eyewitness from the show putting his name on it. I wonder if anyone will comment.
Ah yes they leaked their own relationship and need MI5 protection. I’m not surprised by the abuse of power.
“As soon as it came out that they were dating, everyone was warned to stop talking or they would be fired”
People mag (her bff) has the wendall story. I love when things start growing legs. Even if its half true, it’ll make people high up question what else was she doing before 1 yr came up.
You claim, on the opinion pages of the “failing” New York Times no less, that senior officials working for the president of the United States “are working diligently from within to frustrate parts of his agenda and his worst inclinations.”
“I would know,” you add dramatically. “I am one of them.”
Sorry, what was the point of this particular piece? And what is it that you want from the rest of us? A thank-you card? A round of applause? The nation’s undying gratitude?
Screw. You.
There is no redemption; no exoneration for you or your colleagues inside this shit-show of an administration. You think an op-ed in the paper of record is going to cut it? Gimme a break. You cannot write an article admitting to the president’s “anti-democratic” impulses while also saying you want his administration “to succeed.” You cannot publish a 965-word piece excoriating Donald Trump’s “worst inclinations” while omitting any and all references to his racism, bigotry, Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, and white nationalism.
You did find space, however, to heap praise on yourself and your fellow officials. “Unsung heroes.” “Adults in the room.” “Quiet resistance.” “Steady state.”
The reality is that you and your fellow officials are enablers of Trump; you are his protectors and defenders. You say it yourself. Why were there only “whispers within the cabinet of invoking the 25th Amendment,” which provides for the cabinet to remove the president from office if he is unable to do the job? Why not invoke it and let Mike Pence take over? (Are you, by the way, Mike Pence?)
If as you claim — and we all agree! — that the president you serve “continues to act in a manner that is detrimental to the health of our republic” with “misguided impulses,” then how can you advocate for anything other than his swift removal from office?
Your defense is that “no one wanted to precipitate a constitutional crisis.” Seriously? You don’t agree with former Secretary of State John Kerry that we’re already in the midst of “a genuine constitutional crisis,” given your own op-ed outlining his “erratic behavior” and “reckless decisions” and Bob Woodward’s new book describing “an administrative coup d’etat” and a “nervous breakdown” at the center of the Trump White House?
You are keen to remind the liberal readers of the New York Times that yours “is not the popular ‘resistance’ of the left” and that you believe this administration’s policies have “already made America safer and more prosperous.” You cite “historic tax reform” and “effective deregulation” as the supposed “bright spots that the near-ceaseless negative coverage of the administration fails to capture.” But by tax reform, do you mean the Trump tax cuts that give the richest 1 percent of Americans almost half of the benefits? And by deregulation, do you mean the rescinding of Obama-era protections for the oceans; the lifting of controls on toxic air pollution; and the green light to Wall Street to once again cause havoc in the financial markets?
What is it, then, that you object to? Well, it seems, your biggest concern is “not what Mr. Trump has done to the presidency,” but how Americans have “sunk low with him and allowed our discourse to be stripped of civility.”
Also, what did you think would happen when you signed up to work for a reality TV star who was accused of sexual assault by more than a dozen women, and of rape by his first wife? Who stiffed hundreds of contractors, ripped off Trump University students, cheated on his third wife just months after she gave birth, and cut off health care coverage to his own nephew’s sick baby in a fit of rage?
You knew all of this and yet you still chose to work for him at the highest level of government. You now acknowledge that “the root of the problem is the president’s amorality.” But how about your own amorality? I hate to agree with your boss, but you are “gutless.” You’re a shameless coward, a cynical opportunist.
Don’t hide behind anonymity. Don’t pretend that you have “gone to great lengths” to restrain Trump and “put country first.”
Tell us your name. Quit your job. Call out this president in public.
Call him out for his bigotry, his mendacity, his sheer mental and emotional unfitness for the office he occupies. Call him out in front of a congressional committee. Or a court of law.
They’ll likely try that, but is it believable? I mean, look at the big picture. He flew an actress he’d just met to Botswana on a work trip, then he gave her royal security, then he flew to see her after an official tour, all in the space of a few months. He got away with A LOT.
I’m beginning to wonder if this article will end up opening the door to more articles in Fleet Street exposing money shenanigans, particularly those by Megs and Harry.
Every day since the day the relationship was announced? Reeeeeaaaaaalllllyyyyyyy? This isn’t an anonymous source. This is an eyewitness from the show putting his name on it. I wonder if anyone will comment.
When you think about all the harassment Kate received from the paparazzi, this is really ridiculous.

“As soon as it came out that they were dating, everyone was warned to stop talking or they would be fired”
I don’t find it a coincidence that Wendell didn’t attend the wedding and is now spitting out these details…
Screen shots of this article in case it disappears…
Watching everything that has happened since the engagement, I can only conclude that Meghan is completely oblivious to the negative PR and public opinion. In her mind, she was separated from the royals at birth and has now finally been reconnected to the family she never had. She has to makeup for 36 years of bling and clothes she didn’t get.
But stepping back and taking a broader perspective: there is so much corruption within the higher levels of government, corporations, media, etc. these days. Everyone is a fake on the make. The so called “liberal” media in the “free” world has been dead for several years.
Corporate media is full of gushing articles on Meghan. The Daily Mail and possibly Yahoo are the last two places where the public can still express an opinion on a larg(er) scale. (For comparison, I comment a lot of Financial Time, but a really hot topic gets only a few hundred comments compared to DM thousands). Google search will not bring up blogs anymore unless you already know of the existence of the blog. Twitter, fb, etc. are not places where you can get reasonable analysis of anything.
I’ve seen for myself that in the biggest bank’s headquarters, senior executives are only concerned with hanging on to their paychecks. Every decision they make hinges on that one objective. Apart from a small number of entrepreneurs (and even many of those eventually sell out), you have to hustle your way up the hierarchy if you want to recognized as a mover and a shaker.
Face it, Meghan is a small fraud compared to Lloyd Blankfein or Jamie Dimon, or even the Clintons with their pay-to-play schemes through the State Department. No, I am not a Trump supporter, I am a Julian Assange supporter and I was a Sanders supporter ….long live the liberal media for exposing all the shenanigans around the democratic nomination. Said nobody ever.
Corporate media is composed of craven journalists also attached like limpets to their paycheques, They spew whatever narrative is required. I’ve seen “news reports” that have entire chunks cut and pasted from press releases. The media’s job is to protect institutional elites.
75% (?) of the public buy every narrative they are fed, whether it is about the War on “Terrorism” or Meghan Markle “modernizing the monarchy”. Just look at the all the photos of European royalty playing dressup in their silly gowns, crowns and sashes
….fakes on the make, the whole lot of them.
Thanks for sending this in! I love the FT comment section and it’s so depressing that it’s only a handful of people chiming in. I also follow FinTwitter and a fantastic thread will get maybe 32 RTs, which is also sad.
The fakery is everywhere nowadays, which is downright scary. One reason I blog about Meghan is that it’s less stressful than commenting on Trump or Elon Musk or any of the other fraudsters. Meghan has little effect on my real life, my country, or its economy. The other have a huge influence.
And the press is useless. I can sort of see why the royals get this worshipful pap because they are so secretive and finding real info is hard. I don’t understand it as to the other fraudsters. it reminds me of Chuck Price’s legendary 2007 quote “as long as the music is playing, you’ve got to get up and dance.” It’s good while it lasts, but eventually the music stops and the whole house of cards comes down.
The “friend” is talking again. The problem is not only her family won’t stfu.
Yep. This is not a good look either. They are all horrible people and the worst part is that they are all horrible IN THE SAME WAY and they don’t seem to realize it. You can tell that they are all related.
Thanks for bringing that back. I’m getting confused about what happened when, so I tried to put all the Tom Markle articles in order. Boy, this soap opera went on and on.
Like you said, they seemed to be planning a visit after the wedding.
Now, that article came out on May 22nd, AFTER Tom had already talked to the press.
On May 19th Tom talked to TMZ about how much he loved the wedding, how he’d texted Meghan, and how all his relatives should “shut up.” He seemed to be expecting to see the newlyweds soon.
Remember, he had been talking to TMZ throughout the whole wedding. In fact, the whole “heart operation” drama WAS BASED ON HIS CALLS TO TMZ before and after the supposed operation on May 15th and 16th.
At this point he was just talking to TMZ to explain himself. He wasn’t saying anything about Meghan and Harry except that they had texted/spoken the day of the wedding.
On June 5th the DM got pics of him going to the barber looking pretty happy and relaxed.
Then on July 28th, Tom did the “better off dead” interview with the DM, mentioning Diana and explaining that the contact numbers he had for Meghan stopped working.
I’m genuinely curious as to why they don’t allow the press near her. The reporters were catching quotes from her before the wedding and all she was saying was “Hi, I’m Meghan” and “It’s amazing.” Is she now talking politics all the time?
Pt 2 They also certainly know some significant portion of her past misdeeds and lies. So they see this game, they recognize the hypocrisy of PH/M and they have the ammunition to destroy them both. Which makes the game Harry and Meghan play all the more perplexing and dangerous. This will not end well.
It does kind of explain why he thinks the media should stay quite about stuff like her family and her spending. They are, after all, staying quiet about her pap pics, her leaks, and her merching. I don’t think he sees any difference.
This is the 2nd article I have seen in US media that makes excuses for why MM is not selling. The first article claimed her legs were so skinny cause she was under stress due to PC yelling at her for all the money spent on clothes and she could not eat. Which is nonsense she has always had very thin legs. The other article also talked about her balding again due to stress.
This article is again blaming her skinny legs, ill fitting clothes on weight loss due to stress. And her too large shoes are to prevent blisters – uh too large shoes cause blisters. And everyone wears their shoes too big. I didn’t get that memo. But eh this is Meghan Markle world where the most absurd claims are to be believed.
She obviously is not doing well in getting new sponsors and this article makes that clear. I don’t find it surprising her post Harry plan for fortune as a mercher luxury brand endorser is failing. She looks dreadful most of the time. She has been looking for sponsors before Polo she has ads all over and right after Polo she had a “Meghan’s Fav looks” in People so she is not getting either the freebies or the paid contracts. She really overestimated her attraction as a celeb endorser.
Thanks for sending this in! The problem is that her style is not that good. She looks good in simple dresses, pencil skirts, and skinny pants, and that’s pretty much it. You can build an excellent professional wardrobe out of that, but you’re not going to end up in any “style icon” or “fashion muse” lists.
The weird part is that she could have a lovely royal style out of the pieces she looks good in, but that’s not enough for her. She has to be edgy and/or couture and she simply looks awful in those looks.
Oh, I DO NOT think her family is in on it. Megs would much, much, MUCH rather people be seeing her articles about her fashion and how she’s adjusting to royal life. This Daily Mail story is purely an attempt to put out the fires that her father is causing.
At the very end of the story, the DM repeats what Papa Markle said much earlier: “I was silent for a full year.” That’s a man saying he knows how to be quiet. I suspect that given Megs has hit back in the UK tabs with the heart stuff is fake that Papa Markle is going to hit back with he was never invited to the wedding to begin with. It’s what many people suspected early on.
And then we’ll be treated for another tit-for-tat between the Markles and Megs. It’s just going to go on and on and on. Meanwhile, Harry will eventually not get any press and start getting even more pissy about it. Such a lovely way to start a marriage…
Might as well. He’s got to know by now that she’s never going to get protocol right. Things like that are exactly why she had her pr peeps leak details about the “dumb” protocol things she has to do now.
Personally–the way this is going–I wouldn’t be surprised if next week or the week after if Thomas Markle hopped a plane to the London and did an in-the-studio LIVE interview with Piers Morgan.
And more interviews with Fleet Street. In person.
I mean, we can all see which way this thing is going…
Yep, and he had to apologize through the press because they weren’t talking to him. That was the issue.
And they ghosted him AFTER there were a ton of leaks from the palace about how they didn’t blame him for the pictures and they were so concerned about his health and the were going to go see him in Mexico. I bet he thought everything was okay and he had been forgiven and then he realized they weren’t taking his call anymore. That’s when he decided to apologize through the press.
I doubt it’s a coordinated strategy, however. I feel like it’s more that her family knows her and they’ve been in this situations twice before. They know what she’s going to do.
Tom Sykes is on a roll defending Megha’s decision to ghost her dad now.
They are going to get blamed anyway, by Tom Markle of all people. It’s hilarious because Richard Kay had insiders saying that the staff was desperately trying to get Meghan to make up with her family and she just refused to do so. Now they are getting blamed for it all.
Well, that’s what I don’t get about this sudden “toxic parenting” talk. Tom was supposedly a saint (amply documented in Meghan’s speeches, essays and social media) until early May 2018.
Yep, it’s interesting how they use the language of abuse, but her dad was apparently fantastic to her until the tabs started circling and he got no media guidance from KP.
So, basically now that Mio has stupidly set up a rationale that Megs needs to separate herself from her father, we can probably expect that Tom Sr. is going to come back with everything that he did for his daughter growing up and beyond. Attempted ghosting isn’t going to work this time. Shall we take bets on whether or not Tom Sr. is going to appear on Good Morning Britain? Whether or not Meg’s previous Instagram posts will appear?
Just sayin’…cause this girl gives Fleet Street a lot to work with…
The best part is the one where they complain about Emily using the phrase “newly-minted.” They clearly don’t know what that means and they thought Emily was calling Meghan nouveau riche or something. It’s hilarious. Em is a total sugar, but still attack her BECAUSE THEY DON’T UNDERSTAND BASIC ENGLISH. I’m dying.
They seem to have tabled that until the fall, which is a really bad decision, imo. Its hard to argue that she wanted to devote her life to charity when she basically spent her first year as a royal attending celeb events and spending money like crazy.
Sykes is going on and on about how the criticism is racist and classist, but I don’t think that’s entirely accurate. I think the Brits have a very clear view of how they want their royals to behave–they are supposed so be well-groomed representatives who follow the rules and focus on charity and making the UK look good. He talks about how the critics feel that Meghan isn’t “People Like US” but I think the criticism is mostly about Meghan not abiding by middle class rules about behavior, respect and thriftiness. If Meghan had, say, announced right after the wedding that she was picking Reprezent, Social Bite, and Stemettes as her charities (to pick her most high profile pre-wedding appearances), and had then scheduled a bunch of charity visits dressed in Marks and Spencer tops and Strathberry bags and shown up to Harry’s non-celeb polo tournaments in Zara dresses, we would be having a very different conversation right now.
