Practices That Make You Better Every Day

Making small improvements on a regular basis may actually be better and more effective than trying to make a lot of big changes at once. Small changes will eventually turn into habits, while trying to make a large change could lead to feelings of being overwhelmed, and ultimately failure.

1. Keep a reading habit.

Reading will not only help you increase your knowledge base, but also expose you to new words constantly, which will keep your brain growing. Just like going for a run gives your heart and muscles some exercise, reading helps improve your memory function by giving your brain a proper workout. A good reading habit will help you reduce your daily stress, improve your memory, and even make you more creative. As it helps to ward off Alzheimer’s and dementia, reading will also keep your mind healthy.Whether you can read during breaks at work, on your commute, or even to your child at night, add in as much reading to your day as possible.

2. Have a growth mindset.

People who have a fixed mindset believe that you are born with your talents, and no matter how much you practice or try, you can only reach a certain level of achievement.

However, with a growth mindset, you believe that you can always continue to improve yourself. Never stop learning and educating yourself. Having a growth mindset will let you develop your abilities and intelligence with effort, learning, and persistence.

3. Meditate regularly.

People have been meditating for thousands of years to combat stress and anxiety. Meditation, and especially mindfulness meditation, allows you to have peace and clarity in the present moment of awareness.

There are many different ways to meditate, but all of the techniques revolve around cultivating awareness and expanding your consciousness.  The purpose of meditation depends on who is meditating, but anyone who meditates on a regular basis will benefit from it in physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual ways.  It relieves stress and anxiety, decreases blood pressure, lowers cholesterol, helps the body use oxygen more efficiently, and improves sleep.

4. Align your priorities with your goals and values.

Your priorities are the things that are the most important and meaningful in your life at the present moment. If you want to improve yourself, you must make it something that you are not willing to compromise.

Examine your values and goals, and make sure you are doing what you can today to ultimately reach those goals. You won’t get anywhere without setting a goal and making sure that you have a plan in place.

5. Visualize your success.

When you think about a big goal you have or an accomplishment that you want to pursue, it is normal to consider the obstacles that you will have to face.

The problem is, that we tend to let these obstacles overtake our dreams, and it ends up preventing us from making any progress. But instead of creating barriers, envision victory.

Literally, visualize what it would feel like to achieve your goals. What would it look like, who would be around, and what implications would it have for your future? If you can see yourself obtaining your goal, it will be easier to work toward that goal.

6. Measure your improvement.

Measuring your progress is a vital part of achieving any goal. It can help you stay on track and keep you motivated to move forward, even when you touch on a rough spot. Research has found that when a goal is coming from one’s own motivations rather than being put forth by another person, people are more likely to keep the necessary drive to achieve their goals.

The reason for doing process analysis and consistently looking at your improvement is to improve your performance in meaningful ways. Without keeping track of your progress, you may not even know if you are improving, and you won’t be able to tell which things are meaningful.

Are you delivering value to other people, both in your personal and professional life? The plethora of measures of internal achievement doesn’t say too much about the value that you are delivering. It is the process performance where you want to see constant improvements.

7. Make good use of your time.

It is important to use your time wisely. If you find yourself with the luxury of having some free time, don’t waste it in front of the television. Instead, manage your time effectively so you can make proper headway toward your goals.

It is imperative to develop effective strategies to balance any conflicting demands on your time. Take some time each morning to determine your most important tasks for the day, and create a plan to ensure they get accomplished.

8. Learn new skills.

When you stop to consider the things that you do each day, you probably don’t think about taking time to learn new skills. Living hectic lifestyles makes it seem daunting to learn new things, but you may be missing out personally and professionally.

Continuing to learn throughout our lives is essential for staying current in an ever-changing world. If you stop learning new skills, you may actually begin to move backward while the rest of the world is quickly moving forward. Those who consistently succeed are those who are best at learning new skills.

OMG, she convinced some hapless charity to put together an expensive cookbook, took credit for the whole thing, wrote a THREE PAGE foreword because she thinks she’s Anthony Bourdain, and is now hosting a COOKING SHOW in KP, just like the one she pitched to HGTV with Lindsay.

This is hilarious, I’ve never seen a royal so obviously use a charity as a vanity project. This woman is amazing.

The foreword…OMG.

“Keeping the global spirit of community alive…” LOLOLOLOL. She can’t just sponsor a charity cookbook, she has to have some grandiose mission behind it.

The word salad is EPIC!!! A “Passport on a Plate…” I’m dying.

BTW, that’s the paragraph that allows her to spend half the foreword talking about herself, including laying out her entire resume in one paragraph.

Seriously, six out of fourteen full paragraphs (I’m counting the one-sentence anecdotes separated by asterisks as one paragraph) are about her, and FIVE paragraphs start with “I” – “I was setting in,” “I recently watched,”  “I asked,” “I have a lifelong interest,”  and “I’ve spent many years.

I haven’t stopped laughing. THIS is why I have a blog following this woman. I wake up on Monday morning already missing my weekend and dreading the first day of the week like Garfield the Cat, and then I see something like this in my notifications. Holy hell. “Passport on a Plate…” LOLOLOLOLOLOL.

So her secrect visits have been for a photoshoot to go along with a cookbook. If all the profits weren’t going to the Grenfell community I would be side eyeing this book.

Yes this was a vist or two for the photos. One Kate striped shirt, one white button down that’s actually unbuttoned inappropriately. This reminds me of her India visit.

Submitted: Word salad! LITERALLY #wordsallad

anonymoushouseplantfan:

Sweet salty pickled cheetos! Wakey wakey Houseplantfan. It’s a COOKBOOK! Her big charity unveil is a FRIGGIN COOKBOOK and her contribution is a photoshoot and a 3-page FORESALAD excuse for a foreword. THREE PAGES of word salad ABOUT HERSELF!

LOL Omg you couldn’t make this underwhelming shit up. Not to mention the proceeds go to, “help support communities through cooking and sharing food” That is the shadiest excuse for an explanation as to where the profits will go I’ve seen in a long time. And slapped RIGHT on the cover of the book. So the money will go to mentally and physically scarred people without permanent housing cooking? Okay Meg. Cool. LOL. ½ assed doesn’t even cover this wreckage.

Oh, and another personal favourite of mine. On every freaking page, there’s this, “Copyright: HRH The Duchess of Sussex. Must be accompanied by the following credit…” etc featured prominently. She copyright-stamped all 3 word salad pages. Shit. You. Not. That’s so petty. Normally the © is spelled out on the last page, for any foreword ©s I’ve seen in my academic lifetime. And they’ve been sparse. Because, wow how increadibly petty and in this case more Tig™ than ROYAL. And also note the scathing IRONY of a person who used to take enormous copyright infringement liberties with her Tig™ and Instagram, now DonaldTrumping™©® herself on every itty bitty thing that comes out of her. THIS IS SO AMUSING!  LOL

(KUWTBD has the full 3 pages up btw)

Mio posted al three pages too. I wonder if Meghan will sue him?

I’m baffled by the purpose of this project. At first I thought that the money would go to the survivors to help then relive their life, but, no. It’s going to the kitchen so it can expand to seven days a week and to similar projects. Isn’t the ultimate goal to have people NOT need the kitchen because they have their homes? Are the Grenfell survivors still living in hotels? If so, shouldn’t they be helping them to move into homes? Are they expecting to stay homeless forever? Is that why they need the community kitchen open every day? Shouldn’t that be a national scandal?

The cookbook thing has me really conflicted. On one hand, if done right, it could’ve been a great bonding and community building exercise for the women in the kitchen (MM excluded) and take their minds off the tragedy. But we know that’s not the case here. You’re right about the cookbook economics as NYT had a recent article on its unprofitablility (in fact most of them LOSE money). She’s behaving like a celeb who has a PR campaign to push and not a charitable royal. And that’s sickening.

anonymoushouseplantfan:

Oh, I’m sure it was a great bonding exercise for the women.

You’ve got to invest in the world, you’ve got to read, you’ve got to go to art galleries, you’ve got to find out the names of plants. You’ve got to start to love the world and know about the whole genius of the human race. We’re amazing people.

Vivienne Westwood (via quotemadness)

Isn’t the ironly just perfectly seasoned when Meg in shouring large script copyrights ever single page HRH Duchess of Sussex and then goes on to use a tossed salad made up of other people’s words, that is, when she’s not talking about herself? The example of Karin Schwier’s “Breaking Bread and Building Connection”, which also had to do with community outreach programmes (In Canada!), is just so laughable. SHE COPYRIGHTED THIS SHIT? I’m flabbergasted by the gall and balls of this woman. Truly.

anonymoushouseplantfan:

Yep.

About: Number of times they’ve mentioned SpecificShit™.

Thanks for sending this in!

Mio on Twitter ”Lovely surprise to come home to this! Beautifully put together and making me *very* hungry (especially those Persian dishes!)”..OMG,MM sent the Book to the Royal reporters, that’s way the Book is the3º best selling book,They distributed the book to the Press, her PR friends,Royal reporters,Photographers and i bet a lot of ‘Food-lifestyle’ blogs and Social media influencers (Instagram,Twitter,Facebook)that has a lot of Followers,to do Posts ‘Promoting’ her ‘Humanitarian’ Cookbook.

anonymoushouseplantfan:

Yep, that’s why I am expecting it to hit the bestseller list. The press copies alone likely get her there.

Wow. The whole Gert’s situation has turned into a shitstorm on twitter. That’s some rabid chewing going on. Her fans should all have some sort of official red/orange twitter tickbox (like official accounts do). They attack people when Meg’s doing bad, they attack people when Meg’s doing okay, they attack people when Meg’s not doing anything. They just attack EVERYONE. Cheesus. What is wrong with them? Aren’t they all supposed to have PhDs in crossmulticulturalfuckery or something?

anonymoushouseplantfan:

And there they go again.

https://twitter.com/Gertsroyals/status/1041742317986701312

What Gert’s did is standard operating procedure for royal engagements. They always mention that other royals also visited and supported. Heck, sometimes they go back to the Diana years or even young HM’s visits to show a constant stream of support. When Meghan and Harry went to the Mandela exhibit, they mentioned Charles’ visit with Mandela.

That’s the point of the royal family. It’s a team, or at least it used to be. I guess now that Meghan’s here it’s different.

A List of the 100 Most Important Books of the 21st Century (So Far)

jkottke:

After consulting dozens of authors, critics, and voracious readers, Vulture has come up with A Premature Attempt at the 21st Century Canon, aka a list of the 100 most important books of the 21st century (so far).

Any project like this is arbitrary, and ours is no exception. But the time frame is not quite as random as it may seem. The aughts and teens represent a fairly coherent cultural period, stretching from the eerie decadence of pre-9/11 America to the presidency of Donald Trump. This mini-era packed in the political, social, and cultural shifts of the average century, while following the arc of an epic narrative (perhaps a tragedy, though we pray for a happier sequel).

The top vote-getter is somewhat surprising: The Last Samurai by Helen DeWitt. Also represented high on the list are The Argonauts by Maggie Nelson, Elena Ferrante’s The Neapolitan Novels, and Leaving the Atocha Station by Ben Lerner. I spotted a bunch of my other favorites on the list as well: Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel, My Struggle: A Man in Love by Karl Ove Knausgaard, and The Harry Potter books. You can imagine the rest of the list as well: Roth, Franzen, Jesmyn Ward, Didion, Atwood, Marlon James, etc.

Would love to see a similar non-fiction list. Off the top of my head: The Warmth of Other Suns, 1491, Sapiens, The Emperor of All Maladies, The Immortal Life Of Henrietta Lacks, The Black Swan, The Sixth Extinction, The Devil in the White City, Between the World and Me, and Moneyball would all deserve consideration.

Idk but I don’t think in the entire history of the royals have I’ve seen and read so much name calling towards a family member. Hampster lol. What is going on with these people And that includes H and M there all as bad as each other.

anonymoushouseplantfan:

I know! We haven’t seen mudslinging like this since the War of the Wales. People are comparing the brf to Scientology!

I see the Meg fans are working themselves into a froth over Kate’s (admittedly modest) patronage track record. They seem to think this is still a competition. That’s adorable.

Yes, there was a chance Meghan would be able to bury the nude pics, sex scenes, ditched boyfriends, etc… under a stellar charity record, but, thanks to her family and her own crap decisions this summer, that is no longer the case. For some bizarre reason she decided to counter her family’s attack with tons of couture fashion ops with the royal family instead of focusing on her charity work. Now she’s going on another huge fashion show down under.

Even if she went on a huge charity spree, she still wouldn’t be able to make up for the huge family drama, million-dollar wardrobe, and lack of UK brands. And, let’s face it, there is no huge charity spree coming up. She could have (and SHOULD HAVE) done that this month, but decided to hype up her tour fashion instead. The only events where she has looked happy have been the ones with royals or celebs. Her trademark look during charity visits is “wtf am I doing here.”

Meghan isn’t interested in the charity part. She built enough of a resume to bamboozle people into giving her this position and now she’s done with it. She’s interested in fashion and celebs and that will be her focus from now on. Yes, she’ll do enough work to meet the minimum requirements, but that’s it. This is what she has done in every single job she has had. That’s why the blog was so freaking half-assed.

She’ll probably step up the charity stuff in a year or so, when she starts getting antsy and looking for an exit.

Harry can only climb as high as fourth on the succession list, but as soon as Will’s kids start families he will start a steady decline, a la Andrew. Like you and other anons have mentioned, it explains his desperate need for attention now and for the next 20ish years.

motherofbulldogs:

anonymoushouseplantfan:

I don’t know. I agree with the last anon. Yes, he will be replaced, but it will be in decades. This is kind of desperate.

More like 10+ years. The focus will quickly shift to the next generation. By the late 90s, Prince Andrew was an after thought.

“Or when Markus got himself papped. Or when the Mulberry handbags started arriving. Or when the allegations of a reporter break-in turned out to be lies. Or when she overshadowed the tour. Yes, I know she sells herself well, but it’s ridiculous that he didn’t see through all the bs.” Disagree. He sees it and he absolutely loves it. He adores the famewhore side of her. Any PR opportunist is in his good books. Look at his dating history!!!

anonymoushouseplantfan:

Oh, I think your’re right, but at the time I was completely taken in by his pr.

If you look at my early posts, I was completely convinced that there had to be some blackmail/fauxmance arrangement going on. I simply could not picture a royal willingly doing such obvious Soho House/NBC/etc… merching. Suits was using the relationship as promo! Meghan was pap-walking two, sometimes THREE, times a week! She was selling “Harry” necklaces and rings! She was doing DM “date” articles for her blog sponsors!

I still can’t believe he did it. This was Instagram model level stuff. Have some pride, dude!

Re: Brad getting sued. I genuinely think that Brad actually really cared about the cause in New Orleans, but again, as someone who was a nonprofit professional for years before going corporate is that nonprofit work is WORK. It’s so hard to get right. People don’t expect that they can step in as an investment banker or doctor for a day, but somehow ladling soup for 4 hours automatically makes you a poverty expert. (Which is why I side eye 98% of celeb charity work!) People get get Masters and PhD degrees to go into jobs that will likely never pay them more like 70k. The celebrities that do the best are ppl who just donate and advocate with their own passionate stories to bring public awareness, not make it about THEM or their “ideas” but gracefully let the experts do their thing. I am sure Brad thought his idea to combine his passion for fancy sustainable green architecture built by star architects in Nola was great, but in his excitement and hubris forgot that the point of the aid he was giving the community is not about him or his architecture boner. His project should have never involved piloting concepts for sustainable housing when the goal was to provide those who had lost property with functional, cost efficient, solidly constructed houses quickly. Now we have this mess with all that money wasted. Contrast that with Mariska Haritgay’s incredible work for sexual assault victims through Joyful Heart Foundation. As the public face of it, she tells a compelling story of how deeply she connects to the issue and routinely advocates for it. But look at who she leaves the nonprofit’s operations to – serious hardcore educated professionals who have deep experience in sexual assault trauma: http://www.joyfulheartfoundation.org/about-us/staff

And look at the resulting impact:
http://www.joyfulheartfoundation.org/about-us/numbers-our-impact-our-inception

Another great example of this is Christy Turlington, who almost died in childbirth then went and got a master’s degree at Columbia to devote her efforts to reducing maternal mortality internationally.

Anyway, to bring this back to this whole mess… what I’m saying is that even with the best intentions and true passion like Brad, usually celebs who don’t know their role as a public figurehead and try to get into programming without knowledge run into trouble. It’s incredibly difficult to do charity right. While it remains to be seen how impactful Kate is, what I do appreciate about her is how involved she is in the things that have always defined her life – art, children. She doesn’t overstate her importance and while that might be seen as lazy or not splashy, I appreciate that she defers to others and her personal involvement and level of activity seems to come from a genuine place. MM’s challenge is to come up with a cause she’s truly devoted to and can speak well to, but with so many facades who knows who she really is?

Thank you so much for sending this in!

Yes, exactly. I really think that the fact that Kate brings in experts and defers to them is fantastic. So many people come in with the best of intentions and end up with something completely unworkable and sometimes even downright harmful.
