LOL, I’ve had so many “she didn’t need Cory” anons and, yup, it turns out she totally used Cory to social climb.
The personable chef mingled easily with these major social players at his restaurant, and rubbed shoulders with them at charitable galas and other events. So when Meghan became his girlfriend, he provided her with a passport into the most influential echelons of Toronto society – a clique whose connections spread far beyond Canada.
And it was this quantum leap – from actress to glittering social butterfly, and then, by dint of her campaigning work with organisations such as the United Nations and World Vision – that brought Meghan into the orbit of royalty.
Columnist Shinan Govani, Toronto’s most in-the-know social observer, met Meghan ‘many times’ and recalls throwing a dinner party she attended with her new beau. ‘She was just a cable actress to me and didn’t mean much,’ he told me. ‘Cory is a friend of mine – a lot of people know him. He is a swell guy, and pretty much liked by everyone. He would be invited [to top gatherings] by dint of his talent and personality. Within the confines of the city, being with him was definitely a useful platform for her. He would be bigger in terms of the Establishment of Toronto. He would be leverage for Meghan.
’A lot of TV shows have been shot in Toronto, but you don’t often see someone like Meghan up on the billboards. She was different in that respect [and] I feel like if she had never come to Toronto she wouldn’t be marrying Prince Harry. There was something about coming to Toronto, becoming friends with the Mulroneys, and having a high social cachet. It was the perfect storm that created the opportunity.’
Did Govani think Meghan deliberately engineered her social elevation? ‘All of life is deliberate. I think she took advantage of the opportunity that came her way. It was a case of serendipity; opportunity meets luck. There was something inside of her that wasn’t content with just being an actress. I mean, what would have happened after Suits? She wasn’t getting any younger.’
Yet all this is hindsight. Back in the summer of 2014, before the doors slid shut on her relationship with Cory, Meghan was blissfully happy with her lot. Indeed, life ‘had never felt so good’. She declared as much in her quirky blog, The Tig, which she had launched that year with the aim of further raising her profile.

But he’s not willing to do what William did, stay the course, respect someone you have serious feelings about even if you can’t yet commit, and finally make assurances and keep those assurances and be trustworthy. Well, I assume they would have your passport for those three months while they’re processing it. So if you don’t want to hand over your passport for a lengthy period of time, then you need to do it in person.

Meghan will have to tell the US taxman if she receives anything more than $100,000 (£71,600) from her fiancé or his family in the form of a royal allowance to cover expenses.
Nottingham Cottage – the grace and favor property in the grounds of London’s Kensington Palace where Meghan lives with Harry – may be taxed by the US if Markle’s presence in it is seen as a substitute for income before her marriage.
Meghan also has to give the US taxman full details of her finances if she and her husband-to-be have joint assets, bank accounts or offshore trusts in excess of $200,000 (£143,100).
The diamond engagement ring Prince Harry gave Meghan has been valued at over $100,000 (£71,600) by royal watchers. Because it is classified as a gift ‘from a foreign person’, Meghan would have to declare it to the IRS on a Form 3520 or suffer a $10,000 (£7,160) penalty.
I have a really hard time believing some of this, particularly the insinuation that the IRS is going to go after an engagement ring. Because that would mean that plenty of other rich Americans married to foreigners would have to be paying taxes on gifts from their spouse, and I sincerely doubt they are.

I’m willing to go out on a limb here and guess that most stories of kindness do not begin with drug addicted celebrity bad boys.
Mine does.
His name is Robert Downey Jr.
You’ve probably heard of him. You may or may not be a fan, but I am, and I was in the early 90’s when this story takes place.
It was at a garden party for the ACLU of Southern California. My stepmother was the executive director, which is why I was in attendance without having to pay the $150 fee. It’s not that I don’t support the ACLU, it’s that I was barely twenty and had no money to speak of.
I was escorting my grandmother. There isn’t enough room in this essay to explain to you everything she was, I would need volumes, so for the sake of brevity I will tell you that she was beautiful even in her eighties, vain as the day is long, and whip smart, though her particular sort of intelligence did not encompass recognizing young celebrities.
I pointed out Robert Downey Jr. to her when he arrived, in a gorgeous cream-colored linen suit, with Sarah Jessica Parker on his arm. My grandmother shrugged, far more interested in piling her paper plate with various unidentifiable cheeses cut into cubes. He wasn’t Carey Grant or Gregory Peck. What did she care?
The afternoon’s main honoree was Ron Kovic, whose story of his time in the Vietnam War that had left him confined to a wheelchair had recently been immortalized in the Oliver Stone film Born on the Fourth of July.
I mention the wheelchair because it played an unwitting role in what happened next.
We made our way to our folding chairs in the garden with our paper plates and cubed cheeses and we watched my stepmother give one of her eloquent speeches and a plea for donations, and there must have been a few other people who spoke but I can’t remember who, and then Ron Kovic took the podium, and he was mesmerizing, and when it was all over we stood up to leave, and my grandmother tripped.
We’d been sitting in the front row (nepotism has its privileges) and when she tripped she fell smack into the wheelchair ramp that provided Ron Kovic with access to the stage. I didn’t know that wheelchair ramps have sharp edges, but they do, at least this one did, and it sliced her shin right open.
The volume of blood was staggering.
I’d like to be able to tell you that I raced into action; that I quickly took control of the situation, tending to my grandmother and calling for the ambulance that was so obviously needed, but I didn’t. I sat down and put my head between my knees because I thought I was going to faint. Did I mention the blood?
Luckily, somebody did take control of the situation, and that person was Robert Downey Jr.
He ordered someone to call an ambulance. Another to bring a glass of water. Another to fetch a blanket. He took off his gorgeous linen jacket and he rolled up his sleeves and he grabbed hold of my grandmother’s leg, and then he took that jacket that I’d assumed he’d taken off only to it keep out of the way, and he tied it around her wound. I watched the cream colored linen turn scarlet with her blood.
He told her not to worry. He told her it would be alright. He knew, instinctively, how to speak to her, how to distract her, how to play to her vanity. He held onto her calf and he whistled. He told her how stunning her legs were.
She said to him, to my humiliation: “My granddaughter tells me you’re a famous actor but I’ve never heard of you.”
He stayed with her until the ambulance came and then he walked alongside the stretcher holding her hand and telling her she was breaking his heart by leaving the party so early, just as they were getting to know each other. He waved to her as they closed the doors. “Don’t forget to call me, Silvia,” he said. “We’ll do lunch.”
He was a movie star, after all.
Believe it or not, I hurried into the ambulance without saying a word. I was too embarrassed and too shy to thank him.
We all have things we wish we’d said. Moments we’d like to return to and do differently. Rarely do we get that chance to make up for those times that words failed us. But I did. Many years later.
I should mention here that when Robert Downey Jr. was in prison for being a drug addict (which strikes me as absurd and cruel, but that’s the topic for a different essay), I thought of writing to him. Of reminding him of that day when he was humanity personified. When he was the best of what we each can be. When he was the kindest of strangers.
But I didn’t.
Some fifteen years after that garden party, ten years after my grandmother had died and five since he’d been released from prison, I saw him in a restaurant.
I grew up in Los Angeles where celebrity sightings are commonplace and where I was raised to respect people’s privacy and never bother someone while they’re out having a meal, but on this day I decided to abandon the code of the native Angeleno, and my own shyness, and I approached his table.
I said to him, “I don’t have any idea if you remember this…” and I told him the story.
He remembered.
“I just wanted to thank you,” I said. “And I wanted to tell you that it was simply the kindest act I’ve ever witnessed.”
He stood up and he took both of my hands in his and he looked into my eyes and he said, “You have absolutely no idea how much I needed to hear that today.”
CB things that saying that an MIT professor is a beautiful and intelligent woman is “unicornization,” but calling a z-list actress with bj scenes and messy hair the “best royal bride” ever is perfectly appropriate. That says it all.
It’s still National Library Week. You should be especially nice to a librarian today, or tomorrow. Sometime this week, anyway. Probably the librarians would like tea. Or chocolates. Or a reliable source of funding.
Sure, I’ll post this, but I don’t see why people are mad about this. Yes, she’s getting stuff, and yes, it’s because of Harry, and we should have known this since the day he let her bring a pap TO HIS BEST FRIEND’S WEDDING RECEPTION.

Sad thing is I really liked the idea of her at first. I have a complicated family, and I like that she seems to be a bit rough around the edges. But oh boy. Read her blog. Saw her interviews … then the multiple pieces beyond her crazy family on how she burned bridges with people who were deeply in her life. Yikes!

I must say, though, Andrew is a wily old fox. He snuck his daughters into a state dinner while everyone is dazzled by Meghan’s “first fiancee EVER to go to a wine and cheese” press,. They’ve also been on a freaking charity rampage with some fairly impressive events and coverage. I mean. not long ago Bea was doing tiny charities in India with zero photographers. That’s a pretty big improvement.

For many poor families in America, eviction is a real and ongoing threat. Sociologist Matthew Desmond estimates that approximately 2.3 million evictions were filed in the U.S. in 2016 — a rate of four every minute.
“Eviction isn’t just a condition of poverty; it’s a cause of poverty,” Desmond says. “Eviction is a direct cause of homelessness, but it also is a cause of residential instability, school instability [and] community instability.”
Desmond won a Pulitzer Prize in 2017 for his book, Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City. His latest project is The Eviction Lab, a team of researchers and students at Princeton University dedicated to amassing the nation’s first-ever database of eviction. To date, the Lab had collected 83 million records from 48 states and the District of Columbia.
“We’re in the middle of a housing crisis and that means more and more people are giving more and more of their income to rent and utilities,” Desmond says. “Our hope is that we can take this problem that’s been in the dark and bring it into the light.”

But, yes, grew how? Meghan is exactly the kind of z-list celeb no one wanted to admit he was wining, dining and Africa-glamping with before.
That’s the most amazing part of this. Before Meghan’s massive pr-drive everyone admitted that his Soho House trolling for trashy celebs he could smuggle on his Africa work-trips was tacky and pathetic, and his fans were, in fact, denying it right and left and claiming that it was just the tacky celebs using his name for publicity. Harry would never willingly date a z-lister, let alone neglect his all-important “work” to bang a no-name actress in the bush, blahblahblah.
Now along come Megs and does the same thing with a much more powerful pr firm and, lo and behold, trolling Soho House for slutty celebs is now “mature” and “romantic.”
OH, when this implodes, I fully expect a whole lot of press on “it was obvious she was using him, why couldn’t they protect him” with a suitable guilt trip by Harry. it’s never his fault. It’s always someone else’s fault.
They’ll probably blame it on poor HM and say how everyone expect her to not give permission, but Harry was her favorite and she couldn’t say no. Andrew 2.0.
I’m reading this as two receptions (youth and women’s empowerment) and no dinner and no opening, which is kind of what we expected. Are you guys reading the “also” as she being included in the opening and dinner?

If they aren’t working for the firm by the time they leave university then I don’t think they ever will. Eugenie, Bea, Zara and Peter are all adults who attend the occasional family event but they have lives and priorities of their own and haven’t been trained or prepared to be full time royals. People wouldn’t accept more royals being added to the payroll without someone getting cut anyway.
The way I see it happening is that people will continue to work but when they pass away their children won’t take up the mantle. If you think about it, Anne is unlikely to stop at all so I can see her going for a good twenty years yet and it’ll be much the same for the others. By that point George, Charlotte and Baby Cambridge will be able to work for the family anyway and George and Charlotte may well be married so there will be people to pick up the work.
