Actually, one of the Queen Mother’s brothers died in the war. QM was the one who started the tradition of laying the wedding bouquet at Westminster. The other anon was partially correct — a paternal uncle (related to George/Edward) wouldn’t have served but a maternal uncle (unrelated the royal family but still part of the aristocracy) would/did.
