Can we talk about Leslie Jones in the front row at Christian Siriano’s show for New York Fashion Week?

For anyone who may have forgotten, Leslie Jones met Siriano when he volunteered over twitter to dress her for the Ghostbusters 2016 premiere when she was struggling to find a dress as no designer had offered to work with her. This was also amid Leslie’s twitter harassment issues.

Siriano’s show included women of all sizes & skin tones as well as Avie Acosta, who is trans woman and the first trans person in any of Siriano’s NY fashion week shows. As well as being inclusive of gender identity, Siriano included two gender non conforming androgynous male models in the show.

Leslie has said of Siriano that “he’s so normal, he’s so down to earth, and he does love all women. That’s what I love about him. He loves all women.”

So in the words of Siriano himself, “people are people,” & “we all grow in the same garden.”

(via Why you should become a ‘library tourist’ | TreeHugger)

I’m not sure exactly when I started making a point to visit libraries when I traveled, but I think it was a trip to see my sister in Birmingham, UK just a few years ago. We walked by their amazing brutalist library – that was being torn down. I happened to be in town for the grand opening of the brand new wedding cake library, and Malala was speaking SO of course we had to go. After that, it became A Thing. Even on a recent day trip within my own state, we visited two small town libraries that happened to be open. If there’s a gift shop or a used book sale, I buy something. I love seeing the different spaces. Definitely recommend this!

Can I ask you something weird? If you don’t feel like answering, it’s ok… I get it. A while ago James McAvoy “complained” during an interview about how elitarian the show business is in the UK. Now, thinking about it, I realized Tom Hiddleston and Eddie Radmayne both went to Eton, I’m reading Leslie Rose’s family is wealthy, so… it’s true? Do private (and expensive) schools make it easier for their students while those who go to public schools are further away from the theatrical scene?

duchessofostergotlands:

Of course, it’s not too weird given the conversation about Rose and Kit. Britain is a class driven society. Imagine you leave school and you decide you want to be an actor. You’d probably have to move to London where rent is astronomically high. For the average person, they couldn’t afford rent in London on an acting salary so they have to get another job. They would probably end up on a zero hours contract or a low skilled job because they need time to do their acting. That means their focus is divided, they have less time to invest in acting, and eventually they’re likely to come to a point where they have to make a choice as the lifestyle isn’t sustainable. But for someone from the upper classes, they’re much more likely to have someone who will pay for their rent or provide a living allowance. That means they don’t have to get that second job, they can focus entirely on acting. They can stay in London for years until they make it big because there’s less worry. Does that make sense? A lot of career paths will require you to do unpaid internships or have a very low wage for various reasons and unless you have a family who can financially support you for as long as it takes to do it then it’s going to be much much harder for you.

There’s also a really interesting difference in terms of aspirations. So for example I was watching Frankie Boyle’s New World Order yesterday (it’s a satirical panel show, not important). A comedian who I love called Romesh Ranganathan was talking about how he used to be a teacher at an Outstanding school (that’s the best rating a school can be given by government inspectors) and gave it up to teach at a school that had just come out of special measures (that’s basically the worst rating a school can have). Anyway, he said that at his Outstanding school he ran a parents evening where they talked about applying for university, bursaries and loans etc etc. Then he tried to do the same thing at the special measures school and all the parents were incredibly hostile as they thought university was pointless and for snobs and that their child should get a job straight away. I’m not saying that those parents are wrong- I think that their concerns come out of a genuine place and are driven by our class based society- but it just shows you how different things can be. I went to private school and the one girl who wanted to go straight in to a job instead of uni was “persuaded” not to by the school staff. But in other schools there’s no expectation that most pupils will go to university. It’s all part of the same issue.

LOL anon, the Scoobie Doo reporter Omid Scobie is as insufferable as an overindulged toddler. But his “Duchess Meghan” really pales in comparison to Lainey’s “Royal Meghan”. I seriously thought she’d give that schtick up after the first month of Harkles being wed. But nope. It’s really is her new name for Meg: “Royal Meghan”. LOL. Where do they cultivate these people? Wherever it is, it must be wedged between a ‘shroom farm and a pot farm. I swear…

They are all mentally twelve years old. That’s why we’ve gone from spooning bananas and monogram necklaces to dog adoptions and sleepovers with the Queen.

That video of them presenting the trophies is very telling. It’s quite obvious that PH is giving her Duchess Lessons. Several times, their facades slip and it seems to me that their loved-up, smitten, besotted period is close to over, if it isn’t already. PH expected a glamorous “starlet’ to hit the ground running. M expected the glamorous parts of Princess Di’s life. Neither got what s/he expected. Reality has finally hit them both. Hard. I still think M’s ugly pics started it with PH.

anonymoushouseplantfan:

He is constantly telling her what to do.

Oh, but reality is going to start hitting back harder in the coming weeks.

PW opened today to little pr James Place – a center for men’s mental health dedicated to James Wentworth Stanley the brother of Cressie’s BF who inexplicably committed suicide at age 21. When James Mum announced the plans to open the center PW told her he’d come open it. And he made good on that promise today. Harry of course is busy escorting his escort around.

In America, Naturalized Citizens No Longer Have an Assumption of Permanence

newyorker:

Last week, it emerged that the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (U.S.C.I.S.) had formed a task force in order to identify people who lied on their citizenship applications and to denaturalize them. Amid the overwhelming flow of reports of families being separated at the border and children being warehoused, this bit of bureaucratic news went largely unnoticed. But it adds an important piece to our understanding of how American politics and culture are changing.

BBC’s coverage of Markle Sr debacle very subdued. Now this story came out and I wonder if it’s tactical on behalf of BRF www[.]bbc[.]co[.]uk/news/entertainment-arts-44524374

anonymoushouseplantfan:

LOLOLOL. Maybe.

I don’t think it was tactical on behalf of BRF. But regarding Tom Sr’s interview, the answer is right here:

Conflict is never personal for Piers. It’s just part of his daily routine. Kind of unsurprising when you think about his career though.

Swedish Royal Family Challenge: Day 11- Favourite Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel moment

The Speech to end all speeches. At their wedding, Daniel delivered a heartfelt, eloquent speech to his new bride. Every time I watch it, it brings a tear to my eye.

Nine years ago I had the privilege of getting to know a young woman with a great sense of humour, a strong sense of duty who was also very, very smart. We became friends. The more I got to know her, the more irresistible she became. These years with you Victoria have flown past and have been the best in my life.

There have been times when Victoria’s Official Duties have separated us. Often she is taken to far away countries and continents. I will never forget some years ago when she left for one of her many trips, this time to China. We were going to be apart for a whole month. The night before she left she got home late after an official engagement, and she had many preparations to make before the long month of duties ahead. Instead of getting some valuable sleep she stayed up the whole night writing. In the morning after she had gone I found a box. And in that box I found 30 beautiful letters, addressed to me. One for every day she would be away. This romantic gesture is typical of you Victoria. It says everything about the loving person you are.

Once upon a time the young man was … perhaps not a frog, in the beginning of the fairytale … as in the story first told by the Grimm Brothers. But he was certainly not a prince. The first kiss did not change that. His transformation was not possible without the support of the wise king and queen, who had ruled the kingdom for many years, and who were full of wisdom, experience and had good hearts. They knew what was best and guided the couple with a gentle hand, generously sharing all their experience.

I feel a great gratitude to Your Majesties the King and Queen, for your strong support, and for the way you have welcomed me into your family. My thoughts are naturally also with my own family. To my mother and my father, and my sister and her daughters.
Mother and father, during my childhood you gave me your unconditional love. You have helped me with your wisdom, and you have helped me to build strong self-esteem and confidence through sound values which have guided me through life.Today, when we traveled through the streets of Stockholm we were met by incredible joy and warmth. A memory we will carry with us deep in our hearts, forever. In the years that Victoria and I have had together, I have felt a great support from the people I have met. It has been very important to me. Thank you.

I feel a deep respect for the tasks ahead of me. It will undoubtedly be a major challenge. I will do my utmost to live up to the expectations that will be placed on me. I will do my utmost to support my wife, the Crown Princess, in her important achievements.
Beloved Victoria. I am so proud of what we have together. I am so happy to now be your husband. I will do everything I can ever do for you to remain as happy as you are today.
Victoria, the greatest of all is love. I love you so.

Meet the Migrant Child Detention Center Whistleblower Now Speaking Out Against Family Separations

A youth care worker who quit his job at a Tucson detention center for unaccompanied minors is speaking out about inadequate facilities, untrained staff and inhumane policies, after witnessing the devastation of family separations firsthand. Antar Davidson says he quit after he was forced to tell three tearful children who were separated from their mother not to hug one another. The facility is run by Southwest Key, a nonprofit that operates 27 facilities and has recently signed a lease to detain hundreds of separated children, including many who are a younger than 12 years old, in what’s being called a “baby jail” in a former warehouse and homeless shelter in Houston.

Antar Davidson told Democracy Now!:

“I realized that if I were to continue with Southwest Key, at least here in this facility, that I’d be told to do things that were… against the code of all humans’ morality… We’re not talking about an organization that was good. We’re talking about an organization that, for the past five years, has made millions of dollars in basically the detention of youth.”
